about

Where I live there are a lot of coyotes. One day I was walking my dog, and one started following us. I tried to scare it, waving my arms, and yelling, but he was not phased. He followed us home, and that night started jumping our 6 foot fence to try and get my dog. The feeling of menace reminded me of different situation: My best friend has been fighting cancer. For 5 years now, She’d endure treatments, be pronounced cured, and then the cancer would spring back up, like the coyote stalking us. The metaphor hit me so hard, that the song ‘coyote’ just about wrote itself. I love that as dark as the inspiration was, the song came out “happy” sounding. I love even more that I can tell you both my dog and friend are alive and well. Take that coyote!
